On the morning of December 24, 2019, in the meeting room No. 209 of the School of Information Management, Qingpeng Zhang, an associate researcher at School of Data Science of City University of Hong Kong, introduced the Data Science program, and he discussed about program construction of Data Science with Professor Jiang Wu, deputy dean of our school and director of Department of E-Commerce, Professor Lu An, deputy director of Department of Information Management Science, Associate Professor Ping Wang, deputy director of Department of Archival Science, Associate Professor Ke Dong of Department of Archival Science, Associate Professor Zhongyi Hu and Associate Professor Weiwei Yan of Department of E-Commerce.

During the seminar, Qingpeng Zhang introduced the School of Data Science (SDSC) of the City University of Hong Kong. He said that the school was the first independently established Data Science academic unit in the field of Data Science in Hong Kong, and its objective is to develop into a world-class leading institute in the field of Data Science. It is committed to promoting global interdisciplinary cooperation and fostering professionals with data science literacy and data analysis capabilities and contributing to the development of new technologies and services in the field of Data Science.

Qingpeng Zhang mentioned that in order to train professionals in the field of Data Science, the school has two undergraduate programs, one master's program and one doctoral program. Undergraduate programs include Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Engineering in Data and Systems Engineering (BEng). The training direction of Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSc) is the study of Data Science Methodology. The modules include quantitative knowledge, statistical theory, data mining technology and the use of measurement tools. The program's emphasis is on developing students' ability of data analysis, reasoning, communication and ethics. The training direction of Bachelor of Engineering in Data and Systems Engineering (BEng) is the study of practical skills in data science. Via modules in Data Science and intelligent systems, students are trained to analyze and make business decisions with data. The Master's program is Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS). To meet the needs of current society for advanced data science skills, it focuses on training postgraduate of data analysis ability, so that they can prepare to use data science technology to make knowledge discovery and dissemination in organizational decision-making. At the same time, it helps data analysis professionals to improve their technical management and development skills, and provides students with a rapid transition from the quantitative field to the field of Data Science.

After introducing the data science program of the City University of Hong Kong, Qingpeng Zhang also discussed undergraduate teaching construction and other issues with the construction experience of the School of Data Science and put forward suggestions and ideas.

Before working at the City University of Hong Kong, Qingpeng Zhang worked as a post-doctoral research assistant (Department of Computer Science) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and also as a doctoral intern at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include Social Computing, Medical Informatics and Data Analysis, Complex Networks and the Semantic Web.
