Professor Dan Wu’s Article on Global Data Science Education in JASIST

On July 30, Journal of the Association for Information Science & Technology (JASIST), the top journal in the Information field, published the articleData Science Curriculum in the iFieldonline.Dan Wu, Professor at our School, and Director of the Center for Studies of Human-Computer Interaction and User Behavior, Wuhan University, participated in the research work of the article.

This article is a three-year research achievement of the iSchools Data Science Curriculum Committee (iDSCC). The authors are members of iDSCC, among whom Dan Wu is the only Chinese scholar.

In this article, iDSCC put forward that "human-centered" is the fundamental attribute and core feature of Data Science in Information Science, which is different from Data Science in other disciplines. Since 2019, iDSCC has conducted three rounds of research on 16 experts in the global Information Science field by using Delphi method, and conducted in-depth analysis of 96 master programs in Data Science, 21 undergraduate programs in Data Science and 2,702 items of job advertisements related to Data Science from the United States, China, Britain and Germany by using comprehensive research methods such as inductive content analysis and quantitative mining technology.

Based on the above research, this article systematically answered some important questions, such as what is the identity of information school in the field of multi-disciplinary Data Science education, the current situation of Data Science education in information school, what knowledge and skills should be included in the core curriculum of Data Science education in information school, what professions Data Science graduates in information school can take, and what is the difference between master and undergraduate education in Data Science. These research results make "human-centered" the fundamental attribute and core characteristics of Data Science of Information Science discipline concrete. Specifically, the "human-centered" Data Science of Information Science discipline not only pays attention to training Data Science talents who have made progress and innovation in data and computing technology, but more importantly, pays attention to the morality, ethics and law of data, so that our understanding of human nature and human values can be integrated into the progress and innovation of data and computing technology.

This article was one of the important achievements of Dan Wu and other main members of iDSCC as guest editors in the special issueData Science in the iFieldorganized by JASIST. This special issue included 9 research articles focusing on Data Science in the field of Information Science, and showed general views of international academic community on this topic. Another important research achievement of Dan Wu's team wasWhat Should We Teach? A Human-Centered Data Science Graduate Curriculum Model Design for iField Schoolswas also included.

iDSCC was established in March 2019, led and co-chaired byII-Yeol Song, Professor at College of Computing & Informatics, Drexel University, andJaved Mostafa, former Editor-in-Chief of JASIST, and Professor at the School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

13 top international scholars in the field of Information Science served as members, which include

There are Data Science Undergraduate Sub-Committee and Data Science Master Sub-Committee under iDSCC, andDan Wuis co-chair of the Data Science Master Sub-Committee.

iSchools was established in 2005. After more than ten years of development, 123 well-known information colleges (departments) from more than twenty countries and regions around the world have joined in succession, and it has become the top international academic organization leading and promoting the development of Information Science. With the development of science and technology, data has become the fourth factor of production after capital, labor and natural resources. As a new subject to study data theory, methods, techniques, tools and practices in modern society, the construction of Data Science and the cultivation of data talents have become a new topic of widespread concern in academic and educational communities. As an important force in the research of data management and knowledge discovery, information school has extensive experience and schemes in organizing and mining data value, and is the leader and vanguard of global Data Science education. At present, nearly 25% of Data Science education program in the world come from iSchools members, which shows that iSchools actively embrace changes and cross-integrate with Data Science.

As the first developing country member of iSchools, the School of Information Management, Wuhan University, took the lead in recruiting master's and doctoral students in Data Science in China from 2019, and started recruiting undergraduates majoring in Big Data Management and Application from 2022, forming a comprehensive multi-level education system with undergraduate, master and doctoral degree in Data Science.
