From June 24 to 26, under the leadership of Xiaoqun Yuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Publishing Science, and Liang Zhao, teacher of the Department of Publishing Science, 29 undergraduates of 2019 Editing and Publishing, and Digital Publishing of the SIM went to Zibo, Shandong Province to carry out a three-day professional cognitive practice.
The students visited Shandong Astro Century Education & Technology Co., Ltd. (Astro Century), a subscribed practice base of the Department of Publishing Science, Wuhan University. They experienced the whole business process of the education publishing industry from product development, editing, book value-added to warehousing and logistics. In the Editing Center and Digital Publishing Center, students went deep into the editing and publishing front line and witnessed how the educational and auxiliary books from primary school to high school were gradually formed and finalized in the hands of editors and proofreaders.
In the Logistics Center, students entered the warehouse and visited the whole process of book distribution, warehousing and outbound. Xiaoqun Yuan used local materials and environment to inspire students on how to design information system with book logistics as the scene, combining teaching and learning, theory and practice naturally.
In addition, the staff of Astro Century also led the students to visit a number of business incubation projects/companies of the company, and introduced the operation and development of the education publishing start-up company and the corresponding knowledge service products.
This practice specially arranged the forum between teachers and students and practitioners, and the school-enterprise docking, further helping students understand the current development of publishing industry and thinking about the docking of theoretical knowledge and industry needs. At the meeting, the experts of Astro Century introduced and exchanged the necessary quality of talents, the status quo of the group and the future development of the industry in view of the issues concerned by all. Experts emphasized that the sword of Damocles should be hung at all times, and the cautious attitude towards content and the strong sense of responsibility as a cultural gatekeeper should be engraved in the heart.
In this practical activity, the students also visited the Chinese Textbook Museum. They witnessed the development and evolution of textbooks in different periods of Chinese history from the late Qing Dynasty to the present. In the long history of more than one hundred years, the changes of society, economy, politics and culture are permanently engraved in publications in the form of books.
In this short but unforgettable practice, the concept of "publishing" in the minds of new publishers and young students has gradually become clear. From personal cognition such as employment in the industry to self-consciousness of historical change recorder and cultural gatekeeper, students realized the core value of publishing major in social and cultural records, thought about the new development of publishing industry brought by digital technology in the information age, and made clear their determination to devote themselves to publishing industry and pledge to be publishers. At the same time, this practice activity also highlighted the talent training concept and education innovation consciousness of our school, which is going into the industry and integrating theory with practice.
