The Opening of Wuhan University Postgraduate Summer School in Library Science

On July 10, the opening ceremony of Boone Classroom —— Frontier Progress of Library Science Summer School was successfully held. The Summer School was co-sponsored by the Graduate School and our School, and undertaken by the Department of Library Science of our School.

People attended the opening ceremony were as followings:

Zizhou Wang, Professor at the Department of Information Management, Peking University,

Chuanfu Chen, Convenor of the Information Resources Management Discipline Review Group of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Wuhan University,

Jinyuan Su, Deputy Director of the Education Department of the Graduate School, Wuhan University, and Professor at the School of Law, Wuhan University,

Wei Lu, Professor and Dean of our School,

Xiaoguang Wang, Professor and Associate Dean of our School.

Congjing Ran, Professor at our School, presided over the opening ceremony.

In his speech, Chuanfu Chen pointed out that we should use the professional thinking of library science to see and analyze issues, and encourage all participants to maintain their love, faith and ideal for library science, and thoroughly study and understand the original intention of library cause, which is “inheriting civilization and serving society”, pointed out by General Secretary Xi Jinping in his reply to the senior experts of the National Library, and undertake the historical mission of library science’s culture inheritance. He hoped that through this training, all students would effectively improve their professional skills, cultivate their professional culture, focus on the frontier of library science and expand a broader path of discipline development.

Jinyuan Su extended a sincere welcome to the trainees, and encouraged them to thoroughly study and understand the rigorous academic attitude, grand logical vision and keen academic insight of the lecturers, so as to find a fit target and direction for comprehensively improving their own abilities. In the future study and research, they should closely focus on a series of national strategies such as building up a country with powerful culture, all citizens take part in reading, cultural digitalization, and new liberal arts construction, and fully integrate their own research with major national strategies and practical needs, so as to continuously improve their sense of belonging to library science, and enhance confidence in library subject.

In his speech, Wei Lu pointed out that the School has a long history of subjects and a strong faculty. This Summer School invited well-known experts and scholars from academic communities and industries as lecturers to teach the cutting-edge progress in the field of library science theory and practice. He hoped that all students should cherish this opportunity, strengthen exchanges during the six-day training, explore and think about the development propositions of subjects such as "How to promote the development of subjects in the future? How to serve the society in cultural heritage and intelligent service better?", and shoulder the historical mission of library science in the new era.

This Summer School was held from July 10 to 15, with lecturers from 9 universities including Peking University and 3 industry organizations including Hubei Provincial Library. The Summer School adopts various forms such as thematic lecture, team discussion, scholars' salon, case study, and writing guidance to build a high-quality platform for theoretical research and practical discussion in the academic and industrial communities, so that trainees can deeply understand the frontier news of the subjects, broaden their academic horizons, and promote industrial exchanges and innovations. More than 170 graduate students applied for the Summer School, and 45 of them were granted the entrance qualification after selection.
