An Open Day for SIM Undergraduate Students

In order to help 2021 undergraduates deepen their knowledge of disciplines and majors and clarify their development direction, on April 14, our school grandly launched the Open Day. School leadership, academic leaders, department heads, teachers of specialized courses, etc. entered the meeting room to communicate with the students face to face.

In the meeting room No. 205, the teachers of the Library Science Department gathered together. Combined with the questions raised by the students, they introduced in detail the discipline, teachers, the influence in academic and industry communities, excellent department fellows, employment prospects, etc. of the Library Science major, and combined with examples, answered the students' questions about the learning methods of the Library Science major and the differences with other majors. Through in-depth face-to-face communication with teachers, students have a clearer understanding of Library Science.

"Information Management and Information System majors have obvious features of arts and sciences crossing, and Information Management students receive a wide range of information knowledge. Students are required to master computer, management and other related courses. I hope students should have a clear development direction and make a good plan." Wei Lu's words cleared the fog for the students who came to meeting room No. 209 to learn about Information Management and Information System. The teachers answered the students' doubts about the major of Information Management and Information System comprehensively and patiently from the aspects of discipline advantages, course difficulty, teaching strength, students' practice, employment, etc. The students said that they benefited a lot from teachers’ answer.

Laughter frequently came from the meeting room No. 207. It turned out that the teachers of the Department of Archives and Government Information Studies had an exchange with their students. Teachers introduced the basic setup of Archives course and the employment destination of graduates, described the communication and cooperation between Archives major and relevant institutions at home and abroad, and explained the important role of archives from the perspectives of cultural heritage and social needs. Yujue Wang suggested that students choose their favorite major from their inner intention. Some undergraduates majoring in Archival Science, who were nearing graduation, also participated in the process of answering questions, and shared with the students the activities they participated in and the experiences they gained.

"I'm going to the meeting room No. 210 to communicate with the teachers of the Publishing Science Department!" A 2021-grade student was in a hurry. The teachers present had a clear division of work, and carefully answered the relevant questions raised by the students. "Discipline training pays attention to the combination of theory and practice, and adheres to the teaching content of attaching equal importance to humanistic spirit and commercial rationality." Teachers introduced the content and specific development direction of professional learning in detail, and described the core connotation and educational philosophy of Editing and Publishing and Digital Publishing, encouraging students to deeply understand the value core of Publishing. Students were in small groups, communicating with teachers.

The exchange meeting between teachers and students of the Department of Electronic Commerce was held in meeting room No. 206. Teachers and senior students of this department introduced the training system of E-commerce major to the 2021-grade students, and patiently explained the emphases and differences between it and the majors related to Economics and Management. Weiwei Yan pointed out that the E-commerce major trains comprehensive talents of innovation, originality and entrepreneurship, who know technology and analysis for the Internet industry. The E-commerce major has its own competitive advantages, and has achieved good results in the China National College Student "Innovation, Originality and Entrepreneurship" Challenge, and the China International College Students' "Internet +" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Teachers hope that students could find their own development direction and make wise choice.

This year's Open Day, as a characteristic professional education activity of the SIM Freshman Plan, had a warm atmosphere. Face-to-face communication between teachers and students of various departments is helpful for students to broaden their thinking and horizons, so that students' knowledge can be at the forefront of technology, and students have a clearer understanding of how to reasonably choose their major and career direction.
